Nizar shows his colours again with ‘jalur malang’ tweet

PETALING JAYADatuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has come under fire for his tweets again – this time over the national flag.

The PAS leader had tweeted: “‘Janji ditepati’ malang prayaan kemerdekaan tahun ini di buat oleh kabinet BN, luntur semangat nak kibarkan jalur gemilang, jalur malang! (‘Promises Fulfilled’ – unfortunate that Merdeka celebration this year is organised by BN cabinet, no mood to wave Jalur Gemilang, unlucky stripes!”

Nizar, however, strongly denied he had insulted the national flag and blamed certain groups for “misinterpreting” his tweets.

“The Government is the one hijacking our Merdeka Day celebration (with their theme) and they want to blame me. My tweet is up to their own interpretations,” he said.

The theme for this year’s 55th Merdeka celebration is “55 Tahun Merdeka, Janji Ditepati” (55 Years of Independence, Promises Fulfilled).

Nizar had recently offered “a thousand apologies” over his remarks about the Johor royalty’s successful bid for the car registration number WWW 1.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said it was improper for Nizar to refer to the national flag as “jalur malang”.

“This is the fasting month, the Jalur Gemilang is waved by all Malaysian citizens, regardless of their political affiliation,” he tweeted.

MIC information chief P. Kamalanathan said he was not shocked by Nizar’s tweet.

“Leaders like him only serve to create disunity and promote hatred among Malaysians,” he said, urging the Bukit Gantang MP to withdraw his statement and apologise to Malaysians.

“A man of his stature should not come up with such ignorant remarks,” said Kamalanathan. “He is an elected Member of Parliament and he should respect the country’s tenet of Rukun Negara, the national anthem, the Royal Institution and the flag.”

Umno supreme council member Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said “Jalur Gemilang” was both the official name for the national flag and a symbol of the country’s independence.

“Like many other countries, our national flag was given a name. Even for countries under colonial power, they have flags and their names. The name of the flag is as noble and sacred as the flag itself,” he said.

He called Nizar “unpatriotic” for demeaning the Jalur Gemilang.

“For him to call it that, it’s not only bad for politics, but it’s also unnationalistic and unpatriotic.” – thestar
